This was during the half term break and required me to wake up at 7.30am just so I could at the Mayville for 9am. As usual most people arrived well after nine and we all entered the mini bus. Apart from the bus being quite cold it was a quite a laid back journey. After about an hour or so (don’t really know) we finally got in visual distance of the gallery which is when we had to get off and walk because the bus was stuck in TRAFFIC. We finally got to the gallery and although we went to view many of the other photography pieces, our main aim was to explore the ‘Annie Leibovitz – A Photographers Life 1990-2005’ exhibition. The gallery showed all of her work which varied from photographs of celebrities such as Jamie Foxx to world leaders such as George Bush and also included many of her family and friends. Ms Leibovitz is a very talented photographer and I admired many of her work but I really liked the picture of Demi Moore piece. This was taken while she was pregnant and was really noticeable to me not only because of the fact that she was fully naked but her posture and facial expression were really representative of a pregnant woman. It also caused a lot of controversy because of its content but I love the fact that although she’s gained a few pounds she still looks HOTT. We then went to lunch at which was a good thing because I’ve always wanted to eat in there but it is way too expensive. A bad thing about this was that we had to eat outside in the cold with pigeons running around under our table. However, the lunch wasn’t too bad. This is when we went to the Archive which is apart of the National Portrait Gallery and keeps copies of art work by some of the best artists of the 18th – 20th centuries. I felt really special at this point because I had a name tag with my name spelt incorrectly on it and to actually be allowed in the building required an appointment. We then sat at a table and looked at different pieces from different times by different people which was interesting as it showed how art has progressed for the simple self portrait to things like Polaroid’s and using a lot of props and creative backgrounds. We then move onto the Photographer Gallery which showed art work from the 1950’s and 1960’s. This work I wasn’t really fond of as it was all prostitutes and the background were quite dim and gloomy. I and the other people on the trip then got handed a large amount of leaflets, flyers and information on the different places we had just been in. Now it was time to make our way home. Overall I really enjoyed myself on the trip despite the weather. I learnt a lot about using your own mind and finding art in the weirdest places. It also got me out of the house for the day which is sometimes a good thing. I would recommend this event to anyone who has their own opinions on different things and doesn’t have any money because the National Portrait Gallery is also FREE.
